Evening square dance lessons begin each year in September, sponsored by the Peachtree squares at our Buckhead Atlanta location. (See calendar and location pages.) The aerobic exercise involved in an evening of square dance is equivalent to that of a brisk 3-5 mile walk, but you never had this much fun walking!

Whether you're brand new to square dancing, or you danced years ago and just need a refresher to get back into it, you will be dancing to some toe-tapping music from the very first night. |
Square dancing is considerably different from other types of dancing you may have tried. There is no fancy footwork to contend with. This is more like walking in rhythm and forming patterns with the other dancers. Throw in some swinging and twirling, and some optional flourishes, and you will have a ball. |
Dan Mitchell, our caller and enthusiastic teacher, closely watches the whole room full of dancers, and tailors his calls and instruction to the needs of the class. |
He mixes in a healthy dose of humor, and keeps us laughing at our own missteps. |
Our classes are somewhat unusual, in that Dan starts mixing more advanced "plus" calls in with the basic and mainstream calls almost from the beginning. These calls involve a whole series of related moves. They seem terribly complex at first, but are easy and fun once you learn them. |
Peachtree Squares members mix in with the new dancers, greatly facilitating the learning process. In this role, we are known as "angels". Does that make Jim Young, who has helped organize the classes for many years, the archangel? |

The latest good-looking, enthusiastic class... 2007-2008 and the Angels from Peachtree Squares. |
When you have mastered all three levels: basic, mainstream, and plus, you can square dance almost anywhere. There are more advanced levels, but they are uncommon.

"Graduation night" has some surprises, like trying to dance with a bag WHERE? |
The graduates handle it with good humor. |
